Taking your classic sports car back to key moments in its Motor Racing History.

Le Mans. The Movie with Steve McQueen.. – I wanted to capture the drama between Porsche and Ferrari as they battled it out on the legendary Mulsanne straight.

STAGE 1

After extensive searching, I found the Porsche 917 in Monaco. It was part of a YouTube video courtesy of Supercars & Co. The Ferrari 512S and race winning Porsche were found in photographic archives

STAGE 2

After visualising a few ideas down on paper, I pieced the composition together: the section of track, the trees, the 70s billboards and, of course, the cars. All we needed then was lights, drama and action!

This was great story set in Sicily. Local legend, Nino Vaccarella, a school teacher, drove the Alfa Romeo 33/3 to victory ending five years of domination by Porsche.

STAGE 1

After a lengthy search, I found the car and the ideal setting in Collesano (thank you Google Earth) and began to piece it all together. I need some black and white photos too, to blend with the modern facades to hint at the heritage of the race.

STAGE 2

With the background taking shape, I added the Porsche, some sunshine, shadows and a dry road surface. After that it was some blur on the wheels and rear of the car, a driver, and finally, lots of atmospheric dust to complete the scene.

The winning car at the 1973 Monte Carlo Rally was the iconic Renault Alpine A110 – the car that took all three podium positions and five out of the top six places.

STAGE 1

Getting the details right for the client was going to be the challenge . The artwork needed to show the Renault on a snow filled mountain road – at night.

STAGE 2

With the background taking shape, I montaged the authentic decals onto the car, and changed the spotlights. From this point on , the lighting was key.

This was a challenging road race set in Mexico on the Pan-American Highway which opened in 1950. In 1952, the new Sports car category was won by Karl Kling and Hans Klenk in their Mercedes- Benz 300SL. American Chuck Stevenson won the Stock car category in his Lincoln Capri – the first of two consecutive victories.

STAGE 1

I pictured the Mercedes overtaking the Lincoln on an open stretch of road with a Mexican village in the background. I found the cars but they were going to need a lot of work – decals and colour changes.

STAGE 2

The background was taking shape – mountains, cacti, storm clouds, telegraph poles, the distant village AND the banner. Perfect! Next – the cars needed detailing followed by shadows, blurring and dust.

In the 1957 road race around France, Ferrari 250 GTs took the first three places pushing Stirling Moss in his Mercedes-Benz 300 SL down into 4th place.

STAGE 1

I found the perfect vintage photograph taken on the starting line on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice and positioned the Ferrari into the scene. In hindsight, I should have added the winning number 170 and yellow and black stripe to the car.

STAGE 2

With the car blended in, I replaced the windscreen and side windows and added some drivers. At this point, I tinted the whole scene to give it the feeling of a 1950s postcard. 3-2-1-Allez!
